On June 6, the 2025 Beijing International Talents Carnival event—"Explore the Ancient Road of Western Beijing, Discover Inheritance of Intangible Cultural Heritage"—was successfully hosted by Beijing Overseas Talents Center and Organization Department of Mentougou District Committee. International talents and their families from 11 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Pakistan, gathered in Mentougou District to embark on an immersive cultural journey through the ancient charm of West Beijing and hands-on experiences of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) craftsmanship.
The event commenced with a visit to the Ancient Path Museum. Through detailed presentations on the history, significance, and modern transformation of the West Beijing Ancient Paths, participants gained a deeper understanding of these historic routes. Serving as relics of a millennium of transportation history in western Beijing, the ancient paths are categorized by function and purpose into three types: bustling trade routes, strategic military roads, and pilgrimage trails to temples. While these paths have lost their original purpose in contemporary times, they remain far from forgotten. They have now evolved from ancient "expressways" into modern "cultural and tourism routes" of the new era.
Afterwards, international talents hiked along the ancient trails of Western Beijing, exploring the thousand-year-old charm of the "On ancient road in the west wind a lean horse goes". The activity started from Shuiyu Village, where they walked along the ancient trade routes, searched for horse hoof prints, and enjoyed the scenery. They experienced the ancient villages with their lingering charm, stepped on the ancient and simple stone paths, and visited the ancient post stations hidden in the mountains and forests, seeking, listening, and feeling. Mariem Kacem Boureau, the vice dean of Centrale Pékin at Beihang University, said, "This exploration of the ancient trails in Western Beijing was very fulfilling. We not only learned about the history of the trails from the museum but also personally climbed the ancient trails and saw the horse hoof prints, which was very impressive."
The grand finale of the itinerary was the experiential activity at Jinyu Colored Glaze Cultural and Creative Industrial Park. Located in Liuliqu Village, Longquan Town, Mentougou District, this area historically served as a vital post along the ancient Western Beijing Route and the site of imperial kilns for glazed architectural ceramics. International talents deepened their understanding of the origins, structures, and living heritage of the "intangible cultural heritage" techniques of glazed ceramic firing through visits to exhibitions and production workshops. They gained profound insights into Mentougou District’s achievements in leveraging SOE resources to revitalize old factory buildings during its high-quality rural revitalization efforts. Participants also engaged in hands-on glazed ceramic crafting. Maitri Sharma, an editor from China International Communications Group, remarked: "The process of making glazed ceramics is fascinating. What I painted may not look like a dragon yet, but after glazing and firing, it will become truly stunning—I can't wait! I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. It’s more than just a crafting session; it taught me the value of patience in completing work."
This event is the fifth activity in the 2025 Beijing International Talents Carnival series. It closely focuses on the theme of diverse cultures, making history tangible and culture perceivable. Dr. Ghazal Rao, a researcher from the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences said, "This is my first year in Beijing, it's also the first time I've learned that Mentougou District has such beautiful scenery and a long history. Beijing is a city full of treasures everywhere. I hope to have more opportunities to explore and discover Beijing."
